Dental Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a prosthetic that typically covers a damaged tooth and replaces a missing one. Dental crowns improve biting and chewing abilities and can fully restore your smile.

When do you need a crown?

Dr. Bloom and his team recommend that you consider getting a crown if you have any of the following:

  • Damaged tooth
  • Missing teeth
  • Root canal treatment
  • Discolored or cracked tooth
  • A large cavity

What materials are used in dental crowns?

Dental crowns are made from various materials, including:

  • Ceramic
  • Metal (gold or alloy)
  • Porcelain
  • Resin
  • Stainless steel

What is a CEREC crown?

A CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) crown is made of ceramic and manufactured at the point of treatment, rather than in multiple weeks like a regular crown.

How does the CEREC procedure work?

Dr. Bloom and his team first make a digital impression of your tooth using a scanner.

Your dentist then sends the digital impression to a designing software to construct the crown on a screen. Once the crown is built, your dentist sends it over to a milling machine.

The milling process takes 6-15 minutes and makes sure the crown matches the rest of your teeth.

Your dentist then makes any final touches and cements it on the prepared tooth.

Is a CEREC crown better than a standard one?

Patients respond better to digital impressions. It’s the difference between having a mouth full of tools versus having a picture taken.

If you’re strapped for time, CEREC crowns might be your best option. You’ll have finished crown by the end of your appointment. Standard crowns can take several appointments and weeks to be permanently placed.

How long will your crown last?

Dental crowns can last up to 15 years. Their lifespan depends on both the material you choose and on how you take care of it.

How do you take care of a dental crown?

A dental crown is just like a regular tooth. You’ll need to:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily
  • Floss on a daily basis
  • Stay away from hard foods
  • Follow up with Dr. Bloom and his team regularly

If you’re looking for ways to painlessly and durably eliminate gaps and damaged teeth, you might want to consider dental crowns. Get in touch with Dr. Bloom and his team to learn more about your treatment options.
